Our Beaverton studio serves customers in Beaverton, Portland, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake Oswego, and Vancouver, Washington, and ships nationwide.
Saddle stitch vs. coil binding: which should you choose?
Choose the binding by considering page count, how the booklet will be used, and how you want it to sit when open. This quick comparison covers the most important differences.
| Binding | Best for | How it opens | Current sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saddle stitched | Programs, catalogs, menus, newsletters, and event guides | Opens like a magazine and is stapled through the folded spine | 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, and 8.5 × 11 inches |
| Coil bound | Manuals, workbooks, training guides, recipes, and reference books | Lays flat and can fold back for hands-free reading | 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, and 8.5 × 11 inches |
When should you choose saddle stitching?
A saddle-stitched booklet uses folded sheets secured with staples through the center fold. Choose it for event programs, newsletters, menus, and short catalogs. Select 8 to 72 total pages in increments of four, including the four cover pages: front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover, and back cover. An 8-page booklet contains four cover pages and four interior pages; a 12-page booklet contains four cover pages and eight interior pages. Count blank pages too. Choose interior and cover paper separately, with full-color or black printing. Keep small text away from the center fold and leave room for trimming.
When is coil binding the better option?
A coil-bound booklet uses a black plastic spiral threaded through holes along the binding edge. It opens flat and folds back, making it useful for training manuals, workbooks, recipes, and reference material used beside a computer or on a workbench. Leave extra space along the punched edge so holes do not cut into text or diagrams. The online form lets you choose the finished size, page count, interior and cover papers, print colors, and optional cover lamination before ordering.
How should booklet artwork be prepared?
Send a press-ready PDF at the final ordered size. Export pages in reading order as individual pages unless our team requests another format. Use CMYK color, include 1/8 inch bleed wherever artwork reaches a trimmed edge, and keep important text and logos inside a safe margin. Images should be high enough resolution for print, and fonts should be embedded or converted appropriately. Before uploading, review page order, blank pages, spelling, dates, phone numbers, QR codes, and cover orientation.
- PDF preferred for finished booklet files
- CMYK color and 1/8 inch bleed
- Extra inside margin near folds or coil holes
- Final proofread before production approval
How long does booklet printing take?
Standard booklet production is estimated at 7–10 business days after order placement. Incomplete payment or print-ready artwork, or requested proof revisions, can extend the ready date; shipping time is additional. For a fixed event or class date, confirm the schedule through the booklet quote form before ordering. Every upload receives a free technical file check for print readiness; this does not include proofreading or a design review. Select “Review or changes before print” for a free digital proof to approve before production. Select “Final artwork — print as supplied” only when you are ready to print without a proof.
